Wall Street closes at a record for the first time since end of January
Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.51%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.35%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 3.18% or 6.78 points to trade at 220.03 at the close. Meanwhile, Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 1.50% or 0.64 points to end at 42.99 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was up 1.32% or 0.92 points to 70.43 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which fell 3.33% or 8.29 points to trade at 240.88 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.48% or 10.60 points to end at 417.12 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was down 2.25% or 7.65 points to 332.09.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ:PODD) which rose 9.47% to 303.55, Becton Dickinson and Co (NYSE:BDX) which was up 8.86% to settle at 187.68 and Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (NYSE:ZBH) which gained 7.99% to close at 98.43.
The worst performers were Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which was down 22.02% to 75.31 in late trade, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which lost 14.14% to settle at 640.86 and Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) which was down 8.02% to 120.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CIMG Inc (NASDAQ:IMG) which rose 111.60% to 0.42, Aveanna Healthcare Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AVAH) which was up 49.36% to settle at 5.81 and Skywater Technology Inc (NASDAQ:SKYT) which gained 44.87% to close at 12.85.
The worst performers were Sabre Corpo (NASDAQ:SABR) which was down 35.67% to 1.93 in late trade, Sana Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:SANA) which lost 30.12% to settle at 2.97 and Vivid Seats Inc (NASDAQ:SEAT) which was down 29.98% to 17.98 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1413 to 1321 and 109 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1985 fell and 1330 advanced, while 151 ended unchanged.
Shares in Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) fell to 52-week lows; down 14.14% or 105.51 to 640.86. Shares in Sabre Corpo (NASDAQ:SABR) fell to 52-week lows; falling 35.67% or 1.07 to 1.93. Shares in Vivid Seats Inc (NASDAQ:SEAT) fell to all time lows; falling 29.98% or 7.70 to 17.98.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.19% to 16.57.
Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.15% or 39.37 to $3,472.77 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.85% or 0.55 to hit $63.80 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.84% or 0.56 to trade at $66.33 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 1.17, while USD/JPY fell 0.22% to 147.02.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 97.89.
